Pine DHALO 6/2/08

Just returned from a 10 day excursion in Tioga County. Fished the Pine DHALO in the canyon exclusively and never had so much fun catching fish in my life. Water levels were perfect and the temps were ranging in the mid 50s to the low 60s. Flies of the week were the March Brown and Rusty Spinner along with Pale Evening Duns. Bought some caddis from a guy that I met along the creek and caught quite a few on those as well.

This stream is a gem and a great place to vacation. Quit a few people around, so if it's solitude you are seeking this might not be your cup of tea. Other than that, it's worth the trip. 🙂

Fished there with a buddy last Sat. It was crowded and the fishing was slow for us. We couldn't find any steady risers where we were. Did lose one really nice fish and a few average ones as well, but the scenery was worth the price of admission! We saw a black bear while we were looking at a small buck in velvet. Also we didn't spend that long there, as we were mostly driving around looking for decent spots that weren't occupied. Landed three nice rainbows that were good fighters. BH caddis pupa and ants provided several good hits. Later that evening I rolled a big fish in the open water on the same combo. The pool was over 12' deep and looked like it used to have a diving board mounted into a huge flat rock. Must have been the happening party spot in it's day!

It was crowded every day that we were there. That was the only drawback. I talked to a local Pastor, and he told me that before the Rails to Trails and DHALO came about, it was rare to see anybody down there after the 3rd week of May.

Heading back up this weekend. Can't wait. 🙂

My observation has been that any special regs area will generally get fished much harder than surrounding areas on the same stream. Often times it is easier to catch trout in the open areas simply because they don't see as many flies. I fish the open stretches of many streams and tend to do pretty well. Lots of times locals stop fishing a stream when their tactics aren't producing any more; so if they don't happen to be fly fishermen....Pine Creek was never a secret stream anyway; it's a bit large to go unnoticed!

Don't be afraid to fish the other side of the river in DHALO area. (everyone seemed to fish the road side) When I was there in April the water was pretty high but you could still cross the river if you walked a bit.

Once I crossed- I had that whole side to myself and caught more fish than all the guys on the road side combined.

If there was a bottom release dam in the area it would become one of the states top fisheries and a much bigger tourist destination. But I sure there are folks who like it the way it is.
