Little Pine - three evenings:
Water Temp: Just above 65 DegF
Insects: Slate Drake, BWO, Light Cahill, other tiny stuff - maybe BWO
First evening: I hooked and landed an average brown and an 18" stocked rainbow, both on a Slate Drake). The boys each got a couple trout, but I don't recall the details. We were fishing the two flats directly across the road from the archery range.
Second evening: The boys each caught a few trout and out-fished Dad - Slate Drakes or nymphs. I was only able to do nothing but hook and LDL a bass, catch several chubs, and butt-hook another 18"+ rainbow - Slate Drakes or Light Cahills.
Third (last) evening: My middle son* caught 9 trout on a Slate Drake or Light Cahill in the same location as the first evening. It would have been 10 but he butt-hooked one and didn't count it. His little brother had an evening of frustration in the calm water - several looks at a Slate Drake but no takes. I did hardly any better... a few chubs and a rainbow that made one jump and threw the hook (Slate Drake).
*The oldest son has kids of his own now and went to Disney World instead of going with us.
(Big) Pine - two mornings:
Water Temp: 65+ rising to ~67 DegF
Insects: Slate Drake, BWO (also some spinners), Light Cahill
First morning: With warming water, my youngest and I took creels along to fish upstream of the Ross Run access/parking lot. We didn't fish more than a couple hours. I killed three average rainbows using a Slate Drake or (a favorite) BWO cripple pattern. The youngest creeled a brown using a BWO. The middle son wanted to target only big fish with streamers and only caught and released a few bass.
Second (last) morning: Pretty much the same as the previous morning with 2 browns and a rainbow for me. One rainbow kept and one released for the youngest. The older boy again caught mostly bass but landed and released at least one trout.
Sunday night was colder than Saturday night so we concluded that we could release fish. In any case, my boys will have 8 fish to make fried trout fillet tacos for my daughter.
I mentioned in other threads that we were staying at a camp in Waterville with Upper Pine Bottom Run in the back yard. An encounter with a huge rattle snake when checking out repairs at my in-laws' camp in Cammal the first afternoon, along with the warm afternoons kept me away from trying the Run for wild trout. If we're back in cooler weather, we'll give it a try.
