Pickering/French Ck Chester 2-18-09

Was a wet blistery snow day, alot of fish were stocked. A couple nice 16-18 inch rainbows, and even a brown or 2 i saw in that range. Water was average flow. They wern't too aggressive, caught a few and called it a day.

Good report, glad the stocking went as planned with the weather. Were there lots of people? It was well advertised.

It went pretty well, there were about 6 or 7 guys. Ended up doing 2 float stockings on french.

That sucks thegabber. Anything involving trout is usually good times. I actually learnt alot about french today though. I usually never fished it. Or atleast havent fished it enough to really know the whole stream. The couple times ive fished it was only at the one pull off at the 4 way intersection. I had no idea of the other 2 stocking points, nor that they are float stocked. Speaking of which, is there anyone here who fishes the fly section regularly?

I fish it a lot in the early spring for Sh!ts and Giggles! I wish it didn't get so warm later on. It really has a lot of nice pools, pocket water and good runs. :-D

The trouble with the FFO stretch of French is even though they float stock it - the fish end up stacked in about 3 spots along the whole stretch and I think a lot of the stocked fish move downstream below the wire and out of the FFO stretch due to lack of habitat. I've found it to be good early and then terrible late.

Did they stock the none-FFO stretches? I was wondering about that b/c based on the regs - you can fish all approved trout water until Feb 28....

TDB- They only stocked the ffo section on the 18th. It seems that only special regs sections in our area were stocked this week. But like you stated alot of the stocked fish probably move down stream below the covered bridge. I am gonna go find out on saturday.

Mute-According to the county guide on the PFBC website French creek is ATW its entire length from the state park all the way down to Phoenixville. The FFO area is from the dam at Camp Sleepy Hollow downstream to Hollow Road at the covered bridge. Nice fish!

Edmo is correct in his statement about ATW.

The unfortunate thing about stocking this early (and I hate to advertise) is that you can fish below the covered bridge in that pool and keep fish. and trust me, dozens of the float stocked trout end up down there b/c there are no good holding pools upstream from there.

Edmo, we actually did stock the ATW section with 300 fish via float. A couple lunker browns too :\

Was around 36 degrees, couldnt get any of the trout in the slow low pools to take. But fished the afst moving runs and holes and was picking them up like no other. Mainly a size 18 hares ear and a size 18 black copper john with legs. Whats weird is 9/10 rainbows took the gold headed hares ear, while the 5 or 6 browns took the black copper john, maybe a coincidence, i dont know.

Nah look closely at the spots on the last one, prime indication of a streambred puffer fish.
