Pickering Creek, Chester County 10-10-09

Fished part of the DHALO section from the foot bridge to Charlestown Road, stopping by the usual pools. Water was clear, but flowing strong and cold from the rain. Some leaves on top. Saw and avoided another fly fisherman parked at the bend in the road upstream. Lots of footprints from other fishermen. Nice day out in the woods I think it was 63 degrees out, it got windy around noon.

My dad gave me a 4'-6"push button rod this morning when I stopped by his house. It was in the garage since I was 5-6 yrs old. Being 2-3 mins away, I took a panther martin and went to check out the DHALO section, hadn't been there since august. Too bad I was wearing a red shirt. Neither of us caught any fish, but we had a good time.

Most of the trout we saw were under the foot bridge, must have been several dozen rainbows. Saw one with a black head. Some were 12-14". Some of the brown trout were much smaller. Glad to see so many fish still in there.

Upstream, we saw much less trout, with several in each of the usual holes. Got a few small 7-8" trout to chase and strike the spinner. Closer to Charlestown Road, there were some smaller holdovers or wild trout, because merely our presence spooked them walking along the path. Saw some trout from the Charlestown Road bridge. We walked along the road back to our cars where my friend left.

I went back to the bridge. Two guys were there, using little rubber minnows, and they must have caught 5-6 in the 20 mins. I was there. They were jigging them. All the trout they caught were released unharmed. I let them have at it and made a note to myself to try using little rubber minnows sometime if flies don't work.

Lots of people fishing the DHALO section. I hope the fish are gonna still be there all winter.

Sounds like you had a good time. I was out there today as well from 2-3. Were you walking down the road from the pull off by the moving water and big boulders down towards the rr foot bridge? I was driving a blue f150 and someone nod'd their hat to me as i waved.

Interesting thing about the rubber minnows. Im guessing the smaller brown trout you seen were wild or holdover. Or perhaps some that got accidentally slipped into the stocking mix as only rainbows were supposed to be stocked. Did you ever end up hooking into that big brown you talked about behind the doctors? Instead of starting a new topic for the same stream today ill just add my report in here.

I only ended up fishing the 3 holes up from the bridge in the hour i was there. I ended up with 15-20 fish, all rainbows.

Mute was going on ? All I see you fishing is Pickering these days . What happen with the carp and smallies I haven't seen any pics this summer ...Go out and explore the other trout streams of Pa :hammer:

Yeah that was me and my friend who lives nearby. I remember seein you drive by - I had the hat on.

Nice pics! What's on the one trout? sounds like you had a highly productive trip.

Nice day fishin', wasn't it? Don't know about the brown trout - like you said, they're prolly wilds or holdovers. I saw a few trout smaller than the small one in pic you posted. As for not catching anything, I read the reel had an 8 pound test. No wonder they weren't biting!

I haven't been back to the doctor's. I still have to figure out how to get those pics off my camera.

Frederick, with the stream being only 10 minutes away its just ideal for me to fish it often when i want to try to catch a few trout. Between that, valley, and 2 other streams within 10 minutes that get a winter stocking i usually don't venture too far. I have fished all of the trout streams within a 45 minute radius of me, i just don't go out to them often.

I also got a late start to the carp and bass fishing on the perk. I went out a handful of times to get a few carp. Just wish it was the beginning of summer again so i can do it again.

Frederick, I always wondered that about mute, and even asked him once.
Afterwards I realized maybe its a good thing hes not out here everyday. 🙂
He definately makes the most of the fishing around him.

Lol, trust me, if i had a buddy who was into fishing as much as i am, im sure id be putting on the miles and feeling price of airfare every weekend. But since i don't, i tend to stick to the local streams. Its cheaper that way anyway. But like i said ive been to almost all the immediate streams in the 3 counties around me. Pickering, stony, kepner, french, skippy, Hay, Manatawny, valley, west valley, and the tully. THe only ones in the close proximity i havent fished for whatever reason is unami ck, beaver ck, e. branch perk. and one or two more.

But yea i hope to answer your question, i do fish other streams other then pickering. Especially during the spring, i usually hop around to the ones in my area. When i actually think about it, my area doesn't have many streams that hold fish all year long, besides valley. But it does have quite a few different streams that get stocked. I mean just on the skippack theres 4 sections alone that get stocked all within 10 minutes of me. Whats nice is theyre all different types of water/scenery too. So its almost like youre fishing 3 completely different streams by itsself. Pickering is jjust an easy choice for me during the fall and i know it has fish.
