Pickering Ck, Chester Co. 5-14-2010

I stayed local, again, and decided to fish the Pickering outside the delayed harvest section (although when I drove by it around 9am, no one was there), here’s the specifics:

Date: 5/14/2010
Time: 9am - 4:30pm
Weather: Partly cloudy to sunny to thundershowers
Air Temp: 80+ by late afternoon
Water Temp: upper 50s
Flow: Dropping
Clarity: Murky
Hatches: Light Cahills (sz 10-12) and Sulphurs (sz 14-16)
Results: big brown on a 2wt!

mainly fished BH nymphs in the deeper water and a sulpher spinner (sz 14) or sulphur emerger (sz 16) with a dropper sulphur nymph or smaller (sz 18-22) BH nymphs.
got 24 fish with probably half on top and half subsurface.
The club is stocking it today for the kids derby and they are closing off a small section for the weekend. It will re-open on tuesday with plenty of big fish (and local crowds).

Is there any way that that brook trout is a holdover? I don't really know that much about stocked trout, but it looks like it"s fins are not beat up like other pics of stocked trout I have seen. Is it possible that the summer months were cool enough last year for a trout to survive in Pickering? Just curious.

That Brookie is actually a Tiger. Probably stocked by the club rather than the state and the club's stockers generally look much better than the staties

The club just stocked the Pick a couple of days ago; my brother has been loading up his freezer. There will also be two separate derbies on French creek tomorrow as well. Lots of big dumb fish.

I disagree. That is typical Brookie vermiculation. The kicker is the spots. You won't see those on a Tiger.

I second the typical brookie. If it was a hold over, then it would probably have a bit more color than the recent stockies, and it's fins would be more beat up due to it being in the stream longer.

Just to be clear ... Portions of Pickering are closed till Tuesday? I was considering being lazy and fishing it on Monday so just trying to be sure. Thanks.

Definitely a Brook Trout - the club stocks quite a few of them and they are generally in real nice shape both weight and fin structure - their hatchery is less crowded
