I spent several days on Penns Creek covering a few different sections. We spent time on Tunnel Rd during the Jam and moved downstream of Weikart later. Generally, the stream was higher than I like, but storms about ten days earlier had really pushed the water up and I was happy to be out. When we started we had 650 CFS and by Wednesday it was at 465 CFS. The water was very fishable at these levels in all areas we landed. The water was a little off-color, which was perfect.
The weather was almost beastly hot in the 90's as a high on Saturday and a storm knocked the temps to something more normal for the rest of the trip as we got highs in the low 70's. The weather was mostly cloudy for the last few days of the trip. Water temps ranged from about 60-65 depending on the day.
Hatches were mostly sporadic cahills/grey fox during the day and the classic Dorthea sulphur hatch at 8:20. The March Browns were all finished and only saw sporadic little brown caddis during the day. There did seem to be more a lot more little green stoneflies this year. We didn't see a Green Drake until 5/25 on the water and down near Glen Iron. Last year we saw Coffin Flies by 5/20 in the same location. So the drakes seemed about a week late this year.
Fishing was generally nymphing during the day and dry fly fishing in the evening. I did get out yesterday morning with my favorite rusty spinner and picked about five off in the riffles before leaving. My best day was Saturday evening on Tunnel Road with sulphurs and soft hackles. Got pretty close to 20 trout. One of my better nights on Penns.
