This is a bit of composite report for the last several days from me while staying on Penns and during the Jam last weekend. I wish I could say it was a specturalur experience fishing, it has not. There have bee some good days but more often then not it has been very lack luster days especially in the evenings.
Weather:
The weather over the last several days started off very nice with day time temps in the mid 60's. In the evenings an extra layer was needed at dusk as it was getting colder into dark. By May 18 and 19 the temps started really cranking up into the lower 90's during the day. Just plan hot. A few cloudy periods and a quick passing shower or sprinkles, but nothing that has had any really impact on the stream for many days.
Stream:
With no rain the stream as been steadily dropping since the beginning of the month when I arrived. Last night the stream was at 240 CFS and started off at 300 CFS on May 14. The stream has been very clear of course and in great shape for wading. Water temps did jump up last nigh after the two hot days into the mid 60s.
Hatches:
The hatches have been dominated by March Browns and now seeing some of the smaller Grey Fox variants showing up. The March Browns are never really heavy, but sporadically hatch during the day and into the evening. What ihas been very missing for me is the lack of any real sulphur hatches. I have yet to see a good sulphur hatch at 8:15 with dozens of fish exploding. Zero. BWO have been around but not in any numbers or at good time of day with any impact on the fishing.
Fishing:
I think most anglers would say fishing has been tough. I do expect a few tough days on Penns, but not for days on end. There are a few guys nymphing hard that get a good day, but dry fly fishing is difficult and not very productive. I have fished many many locations from Tunnel Rd all the way down to below Wiekert. Poe Paddy was very busy over the weekend. It has been the same thing. I did have one good night in a small section of stream with sulfurs for a short blast, but it was very brief and isolated. I have not heard any angler I have spoken with saying they had a good or great night. I'm sure there are some, but not int he many locations I have hit. It has me wondering if the last years constant high rains for the month of May in 25 on Penns had some sort of impact on hatches this year? My guess is good as anyones. They are calling for 1.5" over the next few days with lower temps, let's see if that breaks up the pattern.
