Spent the day yesterday touring the lower half of Penn's with the Editor in Chief. We started the day off at Poe Paddy around 10:30am. Minimal signs of drakes but there were a few caught in the webs between the rail ties on the foot bridge. The tunnel is still closed. No fish rising and the water was running around 500cfs which did not appear to bad.

We left Poe Paddy and headed to Coburn via Swamp pine rd. What a beautiful drive I highly recommend it if you are in the area. There are a few vistas that make you better appreciate the land this fine water carves through.

Upon arrival at Tunnel rd. we saw no bugs and no fish. there were two BIG caddis stuck in a web but nothing else. The place was pretty desolate so we headed to milheim for a burger and fuel.

we left Milheim and headed for Ingleby. There the water looked perfect and there were a few bugs of various species but no drakes. We saw some stones and caddis. the water looked great and at that flow I'm sure the evening was productive, but alas, we were searching for the drakes.

we left Ingleby, stopped at the weather rock to check the forecast and once we determined that we were in for a thunderstorm later we headed to cherry run.

Cherry run showed the first signs of the hatch we were not looking for: the crowd hatch. while it was nowhere near full blown drake madness, the upper lot was full and parking was beginning to occur along the road. We did not go down to the water so I can't say what was happening. We turned 180 degrees and headed for Weikert.

Before continuing on we stopped at The Penns Creek Angler. What a fine shop. I have been in many shops and I can honestly say that Bruce is a cut above the rest. while the shop certainly does not have the flare and "bling" that you find in some bigger name shops, it does shelter the one thing you are hard-pressed to find anywhere else, the truth. Bruce was very enjoyable and genuine, I did not feel like I was wasting his time or that I needed to buy anything to get the low down on the crick. I highly recommend a visit if you are in the area and need assistance finding your way around.

That said, Bruce gave us great direction and we headed down to Glen Iron to witness the aftermath of the nights prior to our arrival. In Glen Iron we found Coffin Flies, all over. The water was pretty chunky and we decided to head to Pardee.

In Pardee, we found em'! Duns were one the water all over. Unfortunately, we were in the path of an angry thermal thunderstorm that would eventually rip through our area in Lancaster. I fished for 20 minutes before realizing waving a graphite stick around was not the most prudent thing to be doing at that moment.

while duns were on the water there were no fish rising and my intent for the day was to swing wets for them since I read that Schwiebert remarked about how fast they swim when they emerge. This proved more effective than I could have imagined and in 20 minutes I missed 2 and landed 1. Swinging green drake wet flies may be a new addiction for me as I cannot think of a more relaxing and fun way to fish. Forget a about dead drift and flotant! Roll cast that sucker out there and hold on because when they hit the fly they are not shy!

We ended the day in Pardee and headed back home with the memories of a day on Penn's and the many faces she will show you from top to bottom.

The drakes are on. lets hope this rain does not raise the water too high as this weekend should be great!

Sweet! I'm headed back up after missing them last weekend!

Bruce is closing that shop isn't he? Going guiding full time i believe i read on his website

Hey, I was fishing near Weikert last night. I caught the first one on a sulfur, then 3 more on the Green Drake (white version spinner). There were almost NO rising fish until 8:00, then it took off for about 20 minutes or so. I managed to catch my personal best on a fly rod, a fat brownie in bright chrome bronze at about 15-16". It was raining, but not too hard.

I had the creek nearly to my self, just two other guys. One was fly fishing, the other throwing spinners. They were upstream from me about 200 yards or so... a great night.

Yes, Bruce is closing the shop to dedicate time to Total Outdoors and guiding. Also his Father has health issues and wants to spend time with him. Bruce has always been upfront with what is happening on Penns Creek. The shop will surely be missed. From what I understand he is still going to do his stream reports. You can believe what he states on his reports

Penns Creek is a remarkable trout stream, with its healthy population of trout and an abundance of aquatic insects. A friend and I call Penns a "food factory". The variety of water types and overlapping hatch activity require that the angler prepare for anything. It is not unusual for two anglers fishing just a few hundred yards apart to report different conditions at the end of the day. Different aquatic insects will be found populating different water types. This causes the you to constantly evaluate each section of water before choosing the correct fly, or right stage of the prevailing insect. The shop owners on Penns do their best with the information they gather, but neither can be on every section of the creek every day. So they report what they hear or experience, which may be different than what a visiting fisherman experiences. Often the shop owners are right but Penns is a place where the fisherman really needs to do his homework before showing up.

Penns is a great teacher - but she doesn't grade easy.....

Jeff

I take it you guys don't put as much faith into Jonas reports?

Penn's often seems like at least five different streams between Coburn and The Sportsman's Club east of Weikert, including in terms of hatches. And those are just the parts that I know anything about. I haven't fished it all. Not even all of the mileage in between those two points. I used to just concentrate on the C&R section. It's no less magical above and below. But different parts of the stream turn on at different times and places, in different ways.

That's my personal take on it. Just breaking it down for you as best I can.

Bruce is very tuned in to what happens on the lower creek from Glen Iron up into the C&R area, in all seasons. I haven't fished the upper stretch around Coburn as much, so I don't know enough to say the same about Jonas. But with both of those guys, it isn't uncommon to get reports like "black and golden stoneflies, two kinds of caddis, little mayflies, medium size mayflies, big mayflies, & crane flies..." And it's an accurate report. Because that's Penn's. When it's like that, what exactly they're on, you have to figure out for yourself.

I totally agree Barbless. I dont have a ton of experience on Penns myself, but what i have seen is awesome. My favorite time of year i have fished up there is early spring around hendrickson and grannom time. Didnt get up there in April this year but i am going to do my best to make it there in April next year

I don't know Bruce, have never been to his shop, i do know Jonas a bit and i like him, but it seems like he takes a beating on here sometimes

If you know him, he likes to give a beating now and then, too. 😎

If you weren't there, you shouldn't comment.

Jonas' report:
6/5/14….
The area had some serious rain but we somehow got saved!
Spring and the little j got hit hard and I’m not sure about fishing creek yet.
The Drake should get to Cherry Run tonight.

I was there the previous night (Wednesday). I fished that area. There weren't a ton of people - less than expected for Drakes. I found a nice riffle and pool (about 60 yards) to share with one other person (the guy I went there with). We slaughtered them. On top. On size 12 Pink Cahills using 4x, and then on size 8 2xl Duns using 3x and then on size 6 2xl Coffin Flies using 2x.
Thank you, Jonas.

I fished it again on thursday from noon till dusk. Started below tunnel rd about a 1/4 mile. Even after the rain the creek was perfect. There were fish rising along the banks and I was able to wade out to tge middle of the creek and have lots of success banging the banks. I am sure the drakes produced well through the weekend and may continue to do so into next week.

I caught most my fiah swinging wets. I tied a wet pattern that is pretty generic and could have been taken for anything from a gray fox to a sulphur to a drake. It didnt matter, the fish were looking up and they took the fly from top to bottom which is why I enjoy fishing this way in front of such a complex hatch makeup.

I did not intend to bash any other shop up there. Like I said I have been to many shops in pa and I simply wanted to comment on the warm reception I received at the penns creek angler. If bruce is closing the shop I can say he will be missed but I would also encourage anyone interested in fishing on penns to check him out if he guiding. He truly knows that creek on an intimate level and is very generous with his knowledge.

Thats said, thursday was amazing. Dries fished ok in the daytime, swinging wets killed it. The evening in poe paddy we fished into the night on drake spinners and you only needed to get it in the area of a fish and wait for the slurp! Great time. Get up there if you can.

At least you can admit it was a poor attempt at a backhanded compliment. 😛 I think Jonas's and his crew at the shop's sarcasm could be construed as being pompous to some. I find it endearing.

I happened to be there for this drake event on the weekend after Tim's post and on Friday at Cherry Run, I did manage three trout on GD nymphs during the late morning and early afternoon. For the spinner fall I only caught small mouth bass, 9 total, which was fun but not what I was hoping for. We fished below the tunnel on Saturday and I had never in my life experienced that many bugs in the air. I had a tough evening not bringing one fish to hand. I felt helpless. I consider myself a good fly fisherman, but this was a ego crushing day.

Enough about that though as this thread is 2 years old and I'm looking for some patterns to tie for this years trip. I'm heading to Penns on June 2nd this year. I'm planning on missing the drakes. can anyone tell me what are the main hatches after the drakes finish up? I'm thinking sulfur patterns and maybe cahill's. I've looked at a few hatch charts, but was hoping for some personal experiences and personal stream specific patterns you guys may tie. I would also like the GD wet fly pattern you spoke of Tim
Thanks in advance
Matt

I have found Cahills, Olives, and Tan Caddis to be significant dry flies in mid-June.

sulphers, cahills, tan caddis, slate drakes, olives.

Yes. Never ever ever underestimate caddis on Penns creek. I have had so many poor rising evenings saved (saved it too strong of a word, though) by a CDC caddis. You could say that about several streams, including Spring Creek, but in my experience on those creeks, tan/green caddis is even more a clutch fly on Penns.

when all else fails can always throw a rusty spinner or a adams lol
