First outing of the year. Fished the lower C&R section all afternoon. I got there late, about 1pm. According to other anglers I talked to, fishing had slowed down after the morning. Swung little wets (black&badger soft hackle, tan beadhead sh, beadhead black nymph). I had two fish on, one quite sizable. Both shook off. Probably shouldn't have played the second one by hand. Dumbstruck, as usual. Hookset-to-take ratio 100%! That's the real news, to my point of view.
It's a little early on Penn's. Bare trees, water flowing clear and strong. Lots of little black stoneflies out, mostly crawling on the trees by the time I got there. But I only saw a few grannoms and medium-size grayish mayflies, no more than two in the air at any one time. No rises, just an occasional chaser, slashing across the surface.
