Date and Time fished: 10/11/2014 from 0845 am-0200 pm then from 0500 pm- Dark.

Weather/Stream Conditions: Temperatures were in the upper 40's rising to the low 60's throughout the day. Scattered showers in the morning, but nothing heavy, and they cleared off as the day progressed. Partly sunny after about 0100 pm. Little to no wind, and very pleasant for a fall day on Penns!!! The stream was low, but it had a stronger flow than my last trip. I would guess around 110 cfs and clear.

Hatches: Caddis again were the mainstay. Tan caddis 14-16, were coming off fairly steady throughout the morning into the early afternoon. The October caddis were attached to the cabin, but I did not see many around the water. There was a strong bwo hatch around 1200 pm in a size 20, but the fish just let them float down stream. I watched several rising browns ignore bwo after bwo, just to clear the water by a foot rising to a tan caddis. A couple Isos spotted throughout the day, but a decent spinner fall in the evening.

Techniques: I really did not have to switch from an Elk Hair caddis all day. The fish were on them, but I also took a couple on tan pupa emergers, and X-caddis patterns. Large Stonefly nymphs and walts worms took some fish in the heavier pockets.

Results: Another great day on Penns!!! Not a ton of fish, but the weather and the location were perfect and peaceful. I took a very nice 16 inch brown on a Elk Hair caddis in the morning, and the rest was gravy.

Good news. My nephew wants to head up next week. Barring flooding rain, we might try it.

Nice! Really enjoy reading your reports.....very thorough.

Looks and sounds like a good time. I've only fished that area in the spring. One of these days I'll go in the fall....

Fished Penns in the special regs section on 10/3. I had a pretty good day. Saw two other guys right when I started than no one the rest of the day. Decent caddis and slate drakes. Very small olives as well. Took fish on nymphs and a couple on top on a slate drake comparadun. Water was VERY LOW - looked like it does in 3wt's pictures. A lot of spots I would usually fish were just too low to bother with. I would think any rain will only be beneficial. I think leaves are going to be a major PITA.

Figuring if K2 is headed up there the following are likely:

1. it will probably be blown out
2. we'll have an early season snow storm.
3. There will be at least one warranty claim on a broken rod filed Monday.

lol

HOLD ON !!!

The young un is going with his dad and I'll be staying home. Pretty good chance I won't be filing a rod warranty claim unless I get talked into lending the nephew a rod. The leaves should come down in droves if we get the rain / wind predicted so they should be a major PITA. I'm cleaning / storing all my gear for the winter.... AND.......this one is for you Norm........ I'm clearing out a room for Spicoli. He's coming over at the end of the month. We're playing in a golf tourney / turning lager into pee. 🙂

Well Kray you did say "we might try it" so I just assumed. If you're not going I predict ideal conditions. As for me, looks like I'm now playing in and end of season golf tournament on Saturday that will also involve heavy internal processing of malted beverages.

And just to keep this somewhat on topic, if anyone is going I recommend small bead head pheasant tails or caddis pupa dropped off a stonefly nymph if you can't find any top water action. Streamers should also produce.

GOD I MISS SPICOLI, he has to be a good golfer with how Mello he is, he had to be the luckiest person that weekend on the D. The look on his face when I described my fathers funeral was Priceless

He played competitive teen golf in so cal. He's quite good.

I also suggested to the youngster...PT, bugger and micro egg if he wants action.
