Dear Board,
My brother and I got our guided smallmouth float in yesterday. The Juniata was too high and dirty, so we went to Penns Creek at Hoover Island and fished the lower stretch from just below the 11/15 bridge to the mouth at the Susquehanna.
We fished from about 9:45 AM to 4:45 PM. Air temps ranged from the mid-40's at the start to the mid 50's when we left but with the NW wind blowing steadily it felt much colder than that. Little to no actual sunshine except for the occasional 5-minute break in the clouds helped keep it chilly. It may have been the coldest fishing trip I was ever on, and I've steelhead fished in single digit temperatures, but sitting exposed in a boat is a whole other story.
Fishing was tough but we managed about 30 fish and all of them were quality fish from 14 to 19 1/2 inches.
My brother fly fished and caught the majority of his fish on a marabou leech looking thing in rusty brown in a size 2 or 4. It was a big dark fly, and his only bites were on that and an olive and yellow Clouser though he tried several other flies. He used a 7 wt. with a slow intermediate tip line.
I slummed it and fished a black and bubblegum colored NED rigged split tailed grub. I tried other colors along with tube jigs and flukes, but they went unmolested all day.
Here is my brother Michael with the hoss of the day. We are already looking forward to fishing with our guide again in October because we have such a great time with him!
