First Time on Upper Penn's Creek – Great Afternoon on the Water

The wife and I had the chance to fish a private ¾-mile stretch of very upper Penn's Creek, about 3 miles downstream from Penn's Cave. I had never fished this section before, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. It’s definitely a different experience than the water I'm used to around Poe Paddy and below.

Conditions:
  • Air Temp: 75°F, slightly overcast
  • Water Temp: 57°F, very clear

I hit the water around 3 PM and fished until dark. I started off with a #12 black ant and immediately got into some action—picked up 3 or 4 little wild browns right away. Beautiful fish and aggressive.

Eventually lost that fly, so I switched over to a Royal Coachman and kept the streak going. Continued picking up more wild browns along with a couple of stocked rainbows mixed in.

Final Tally:
  • ~12 wild browns, all in the 5"–10" range
  • 2 stocked rainbows

Nothing huge, but steady action and a great time exploring a new section of Penn's.
