According to the USGS gauge Penns was at about 485 cfs yesterday. According to my sore legs and back this morning that seems about right. Water is high but fishable, nice green color but I'll caution that if we get a decent shot of rain it may quickly become unfishable. Fished the C&R stretch from approximately 9:00am to 4:00pm. Had to work hard for fish. It was a nymphing game. All the fish I landed, with the exception of one were taken on #8 and #10 stonefly patterns. I have most success with woven body brown and yellow stones. Also simple imitations - variegated brown/yellow chenille with rubber legs. Caught fish in the typical pocket water they like to hang out in. Wading was difficult to say the least. Saw an occasional bwo and a small stonefly or two. If you go make sure you have a wading staff.
I was really impressed with the "new" tunnel at Poe Paddy. They extended it out a little on both ends, especially the bridge side, to get away from the sides of the mountain where the rocks have been falling at the entrances I guess. Nice stonework at the entrances. Interior is all the same diameter now, lined completely with corrugated metal. New floor throughout. It almost seems like they straightened it out a bit but perhaps it's just the larger inside diameter. You can actually see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel when you enter it. No need to use your flashlight or blindly walk through in the darkness. I was curious about the need to post signs warning about ice in the tunnel but almost the entire floor had about an inch or two of water on it. Looks like they need to do some drainage improvements. Bottom line - I will no longer walk quickly through that thing worrying that I'm going to get killed by a falling rock. Wonderful improvement.
