After years of fly fishing and hearing and reading about it, I finally fished the green drake hatch. What a spectacle and amazing sight. Between all the bugs and the fisherman, it was quite a show.

My father and I decided last minute to drive to Penns after having a rough day on the Little J. We figured even if its too crowded to enjoy, we would still get to see the hatch. We drove to Coburn and got there around 4:30 PM to find almost no places to park. We made a spot along the road got dressed and walked... A lot. We walked down stream pretty far where there weren't as many people and I couldn't pass up a beautiful deep run. I nymphed it with a giant GD nymph and hooked two. I started to get sucked into that spot and decided to give it up. People started showing up left and right so I walked down to some nicer dry fly water and staked a claim. My father, myself, and my fishing buddy grabbed some nice water just in time as everyone came out of the woodwork!

I have never seen so many people on a stream before and thought to myself that it would be miserable. However, the anglers around us were very courteous, and everyone stayed on their peice of "property". Only one guy tried to creep up on my friend, but turned around after he realized my friend was a novice and casted a but wildly.

Before the spinner fall took off I had one fish annihilate my foam body coffin fly pattern. Rises were sporadic and explosive, but there weren't large numbers. After a while of seeing a few GD duns, caddis flies, both sulphur duns and spinners, and lots of GD spinners, the cloud showed up. The cloud started high up, and we were amazed by the size and numbers of those helicopter bugs! I would guess some of them may have been a size 6 or 4. It was amazing to see those bugs buzzing around in droves. The cloud slowly began to drop and the trout started rising more consistently. I would pick a rising fish and start pounding him with my fly with short drifts over that area. Half of the time the fish would take after a few dozen quick drifts, but only a quarter of that time I would actually set the hook correctly. It doesn't matter how many times I tell myself to wait after the strike, I still get excited and yank the fly too soon.

Just before dark the spinners fell and the fish went nuts. The only problem was your fly was 1 of a thousand and you couldn't hardly see anymore. We played cast an guess until we couldn't see anymore and called it quits. I finished the night with 4 fish to hand and countless missed strikes. My father and buddy each caught 1 and missed quite a few. It didn't matter how many we caught, just experiencing the spinner fall was amazing. This may have to turn into an annual trip!

This is what people don't understand who derisively call it a circus.

fished the drake wed night was no one around and all 4 of us hooked alot of trout

It was a great night. I never made it a priority to fish because I wrote it off as a "circus". It was a nice change of pace and a fun event to fish.
