I fished below Ingelby. Water had a healthy flow, you had to be careful wading, but Penns was definitely fishable, not blown out. Flow was 723.

Started fishing during the afternoon and picked up a few on green drake duns. There were sporadic drakes hatching, spinners dancing, and an occasional trout rising. As the evening grew nearer the insect and trout activity picked up speed. By nightfall it was incredible. There were duns in the air, a mass of them flying upstream as is typical during the heart of the drake hatch (although not as large an amount as I’ve seen before), plus on the water trying to take flight.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but that was the main hatch for this year in that section of Penns because the next night all was quiet. I’m guessing the change in temperature of extremely hot days prior must have sparked hatch activity all through Penns and in effect lessened the main hatch movement heading upstream.

I was wading in the middle of the creek, and I had trout rising 360 degrees around me. Trout were rising everywhere. They were even rising within arm’s length of me, I actually had to move away from risers (they were too close) so I could float a fly be them. It was amazing to see how many trout were feeding at the same time.

I used a green drake dun pattern and brought at least 10 to net. In addition I had a half dozen hooked but lost them, and a whole lot of misses. I wasn’t too successful dead drifting the duns, but when I gave them a little action (like the actual drakes wiggling trying to take flight) the trout were hitting it hard. My two biggest were 16 and 18 inches (measured against my rod).

It was another fun night on Penns.

John,

Good to hear. We had one member of our crew wanting to go to ingleby, but he wasn't loud enough. Should've listened.

I got most of my strikes on the twitch as well. 2-3 dead drifts with no takes, and I'd give it a few twitches... BAM.

Fished above Glen Iron yesterday as well in one of my favorite spots and the Slate drakes were coming off. I was catching under water on Stonefly's very well

Good to see you finally got to fish your favorite spot on Penns. You do have that stream figured out if that is possible. I'm heading up today for a couple of days, because of back probably won't be able to fish.
