Weather:
Muggy conditions with low clouds the entire trip. There was a chance of thunderstorms each day, but everything missed us. Air temps in the mid 80s, but it felt hotter with the humid conditions.
Water:
Dropping from 500 cfs down into the low 400 cfs range. The water color was really off, with near muddy conditions on Wednesday, clearing to a dark chalky green on Friday. It was great for approaching fish, but definately worse than what you would expect for the cfs level.
Hatches:
All of the above, the main show was the Green Drakes, but they were sparser in some places and heavier in others. We hit one okay spinner fall and the second night was a heavy coffin fly spinner fall. Also, sulphers, both big and small, caddis size 14, craneflies, Isos and a few black quills. Basically, bug soup.
Results:
Another great and eventful year chasing the drakes. We spent a lot of down time during the day, but when a fish would show on the surface, a good presentation would be promptly taken. On Thursday, we had bug soup to the extreme near the bottom of the C & R stretch for a solid three hours. We took fish on top using Adams, ISO emergers, Sulpher emerger half and half flies, and Drakes. It seemed as though, a rotation in pattern would elicit a strike. I took a stud hen on Wednesday night on a drake, which rose about 8 feet down stream, and provided a black tailwalk sillouette as she ran off line. My old college friend from Pittsburg, took a monster male on Friday in the 20 inch range at dusk on a Green Drake Parachute and my good friend from Maryland took several solid fish each day. It was a great trip with great people, that I am blessed to know!!!
