I got to fish Penns Creek for a couple hours yesterday evening, from about 5:45 to 7:45 when it got dark. I'm already starting to miss long days. Almost didn't go but I figured 2 hours was better than no hours, and I'm glad I went. The action on top was consistent until everything shut off at 7:30. The water was 60 and had cleared up a bit since the weekend though it still had some color. The air was mid 60s and not opressively hot like it was this weekend. The flow was great, around 230cfs on the gauge, 4 times higher than it was at this time last year. BWOs and Cahills (#16 or so) were hatching the whole time and the fish were rising to them. I also saw a few small caddis and the occasional Slate Drake. I've heard that October Caddis were around but I didn't see any.
I showed up with a #16 bright yellow CDC/biot body emerger still tied on from my last trip (a gaudy fly I chose in desperation as I wasn't catching anything that day) and stuck with it the whole time after catching a fish on my second cast (always inspires confidence in a fly). I caught a bunch of browns and probably twice as many chubs. Three of the browns were 14-15" which was a welcome change from the 10-12" fish I'd caught over the past week plus. I was starting to wonder where the slightly bigger ones were.
So that was fun. We're supposed to get a couple inches of rain tomorrow/Thursday so I'm hoping the flows are really good for a while. Check out all the pretty female (I think) below. Not the biggest fish of the day, but definitely the prettiest.
