Penns Creek, Centre Co, 5/3/2010

i started out about a mile above Wiekert about 3 pm. Water was at a good fishing flow and im guessing the temp was in the mid 50's. From 3 pm to 7 pm, it was really slow. I am going to blame the bright sun and windy conditions for lack of bugs and rising fish. During that time, i seen at most 4 different rises. March Browns and an occassional sulpher was hatching but nothing was taking them. Around 7 pm, the bug activity started to pick up with a splash here and there. things started to happen around 8 pm. Sulphers were coming off at a good pace and the March brown spinners were over head. A few trout were taking a sulpher here and there. A few march brown spinners hit the water and a few trout took them. I had to leave because of darkness, but the march brown spinner fall really never happen. atleast, not in the big numbers that were in the air. I edded up with 2 smallmouth and 2 decent brownies. It wasnt a great day in numbers but you take what you can get on Penns.

I had a similar experience above Cherry Run the same evening. Very little happening until 8pm, then 30 mins of good Sulphur emergence, then nothing. The trout never really got moving even with the number of flies on the water.

i fished above cherry run that morning, and caught a few fish, including two real nice ones. it went dead in the afternoon though, thats for sure. there was a tree down across the road, otherwise I probably wouldn't have stuck around in the afternoon. i also saw a nice rattlesnake on the way home as well. it was a neat day.

i actually like snakes. i realize a lot of people kill them. this one was a bit mad that i moved him off the road. this is mostly for show. i used a stick to lift him it the road, and it started to flee as soon as i touched it with the stick. it wasn't actually interested in striking at me. they rattle and curl up and try to intimidate you, but they just want to be left alone.

Those things are nasty, always got to watch your step at Penns! I have fished there a lot and luckily have seen more bears then rattlers.

Ive seen ratlers down there also saw a 7 ft black snake down there. I saw a bald eagle friday down by poe paddy.

Rattlers, and its not close. But neither is all that significant of a threat....
