Got on the water around 10am Monday. My brother and I headed down from the Tunnel at Poe Paddy on our bikes and pulled off about 2 miles in. The weather and water couldn't of been better, overcast skies, 50 degrees with light drizzle. The following bugs were hatching in decent numbers throughout the day, #14 Sulphurs, #12 March Browns, #14 Grey Foxes, #20 BWO and Tan Caddis. Had a few splashy rises here and there but nothing consistant. Luckily the fish were on to our #12 Copper John's. Best day of nymph fishing I have had on Penn's in a long time. The evening didn't get much better with rising fish, but the bug activity increased. Right at dark we saw a few more fish rising in the broadwaters but nothing to brag about. Sulphur Spinnerfall blanketed the water.

We got up earlier today and the weather was the same, maybe a bit cooler. The water is very low and clear, perfect for dry fly fishing. Caught a few in the morning on the #12 Copper John then March Browns started hatching. We would find a few rising fish in each hole, cast to them then move on to the next. There were not a ton of fish rising but enough to make the afternoon go by quickly. I kept waiting for the stream to blow up but it never happened, it wasn't for lack of bugs that is for sure. Anyone else fish it the last few days, I am curious to hear about the results???

penns has been great. i fished yesterday and monday and caught a 25 fish between the two days, mostly on caddis nymphs. ten fish between 16"-18", which is very, very unusual for me during the day. i lost some very big fish that i won't forget soon. the fish in penns are looking very fat this year:

I had fished up there (closer to Cherry Run) during the Hendrickson / Grannom hatches. It was sunny and that may have been my downfall but did see tons of bugs and very few rises. The last few times I've been up there, the insect activity has been great but not many fish on top. Anyone else notice that or did I just hit it on bad days?
 
I've always had decent amounts of rising fish over the past couple of years. It just seemed a little strange or tougher than usual. That's all. Good day.
 
Just got an update from my brother who is camping at Poe Paddy, I guess the dry fly fishing has picked up since I left on Tuesday, they are running into risers the majority of the day and the Drakes are creeping their way up stream.

sight nymph they are still eating , just not emergers in the film or duns ontop , grannoms return to the stream bottom to lay eggs as an adult , why jump out of the water and waste all that energy when u can let the bug come to !!! certain hatches are better for rising fish , depends on the characteristics of the insect ! to figure out the trout we must figure out the bugs first ! u will see alot of rising fish during the sulfurs , the nymphs are quick swimmers , the fall dead on the water etc...
 
Grannoms swim back to the bottom to lay eggs? Never knew that and only fished that hatch a handful of times in 25 yrs. You never stop learning at this game.
 
Was going to fish the drake today penns is muddy will be shot for a couple days.

To continue the report for the following two days we (Fredrick and I) fished Penns Wed afternoon (5/19). It was cloudy and cool, a perfect Penns day. We started the first hole after the PP tunnel. When we arrived around 2pm to some fish rising. Some MBs were hatching and I picked up a few on a MB emerger. The risers thumbed their nose at Fred, so he started throwing wooly buggers at the rising fish and picked up a few....lol (he still young and foolish...mostly foolish though).

Towards evening some MBs spinners came down along with some sulphurs with no risers...go figure. We stayed until dark and crossed back over thru the tunnel. There were sulphurs and fish rising by the footbridge, and Fredrick pulled a few out in the dark.

On Thursday we fished Penns around Cherry Run. Warm with bright sunshine. Nothing happening at all. An occasional MB and sulphur with some misc caddis...no risers. Nymphing yielded next to nothing for me. A few of us (Tocar, Larry, Fredrick, and I) walked upstream a good ways and staked out a nice pool/run and waited for the evening hatch. Later in the evening some fish rising here and there to sulphurs, until almost dark and the MBs came down. Fishing was good for 1/2 hour or so. I caught my best fish of the trip (18") on a nymph trailing a MB. The fish was in the fast water obviously chasing something emerging not surface feeding. I dropped a nymph below my dry and caught him on the first cast.

Very tough day on Penns for most until darkness fell....no surprise there in the bright sun. BTW we saw only a few GDs here and there. They were not up that far as of Thursday. They were reported getting heavy at Glen Iron to Weikert from my understanding

Penns is tough...but a beautiful place to fish. We all had a great time!
 
Finally rain needed that badly was drying and warming fast.
 
I had my best dry fly fishing of the year at penns during the hendrickson.
 
Penns is getting dangerously low and warm I hate to see it like this.
 
Walked it today. Checked out temp this morning. Had two cool nights in a row, now they need rain. Fished near Pardee this morning for small mouth, did really well. Reached 73 degrees by 1130am.
