Penns Creek, Centre Co., 5/14/12

Had the unfortunate experience of arriving Monday May 14 at about 3 pm with high hopes of early Drakes among sulphurs and gray foxes. Waters were rising, with very little surface activity Monday after about 4 pm. Hopes soon to be dashed by high water. Still too high even today. Green Drakes will no doubt come out swinging as soon as the water levels let them do so (next week?).

Hate to break it to you but the Drakes won't necessarily wait for the water to come down. I have seen them hatching plenty of times in high coffee colored water on Penns. There have been many years the Drakes have not been fishable due to water levels.

I hear ya looks like it has improved quite a bit. We went up to Kettle Creek Tuesday, no high water, water temp 58, plenty of bugs including Drakes, but no rising. Same at Little J above Tyrone on wednesday May 16 waited until dark sulphurs gray foxes spinners no risers other than smallmouth bass (caught 2 on dries).

Disappointing dues paying episode. C'est la vie.

I managed to catch the drakes on penns today above cherry run. Water was quite fast so you needed to find eddies, cuts and slicks. Caught one chub on a gd nymph and 3 browns 16 to 20 inches on a gd emerger and a coffin fly. The gnats were awful, they were chewing on my head. I would guess the hatch will be around Ingleby tomorrow, wish i had one more evening to fish.
