Hey, just got home and now that I have a belly full of scotch and can mostly feel my fingers I thought I'd share. Penns Creek was fire today and I have no idea why. The air was 20 degrees and the water was in the high 30's, but man the action was hot.
Parked down the road from the mid-state trail lot (not plowed) and fished my favorite spots for about a mile upstream. Every spot produced fish. Mostly deeper slower holes, though I caught them in places I didn't expect to as well. Hiking in the deep snow was a legit workout but it was worth it. If anyone goes tomorrow you can follow my footsteps and find my favorite spots (I'm sure they're no secret and it looks like maybe one other person has fished out there in the last 10 days). I wish I could go again tomorrow but it's my turn to take care of the kid.
Also this size 18 hare's ear dirty bird that I've been tying REALLY heavy (a couple wraps of non-lead wire and a tungsten bead) was deadly with an intermediate sinking leader on the swing. Fish hit it like a ton of bricks, sometimes breaking me off before I could do a thing (icy guides and super light tippet). Giant olive zonkers worked too when I wanted a total change of pace.
All in all, just an unexpectedly wild and wonderful day. LMK if anyone goes tomorrow, I want to fish vicariously.
