Fished the lower end of the C&R section for about 2 hours yesterday, up until sunset. Picked up one healthy brownie about 11" with a #12 orange soft hackle tied on a tag about 20" above a weighted rabbit streamer point fly, swung downstream. Vigorous fish- leaped twice, a foot clear of the water!
The water level and current was quite high and fast, especially compared to fall conditions in previous years when I'd fished the same stretch of the creek. Not impossible to wade, but difficult enough that I stayed close to the shore. There was a little bit of that bane of autumn, the leaf hatch, but not enough to be overly annoying. The water was clear, but I'm not sure how the the rain that fell since yesterday evening might have affected things since then.
The air temp was was warm, almost hot- close to 80 degrees at 6pm. I didn't notice any bugs coming off the water. Saw one flying slate drake. There was a hatch, though- mosquitoes. In mid-October. Fortunately, I had some repellent that worked pretty well (natural stuff, lemon and eucalyptus, works better under most circumstances than I had expected, although I still got some bites through my t-shirt.) Hopefully, the temperature drop that's expected by this weekend will make for more comfortable fishing.
