Arrived on the stream about 2:00 and fished till a little past 6. I parked at the end of the road below Coburn and fished down. This is the farthest up I've ever fished Penns, I had always parked at Poe Paddy or below. Though, after some walking, I did get into some of the same stretches I had fished from Poe Paddy up.

Bug wise, there was a bit of everything. March browns were probably most prolific, but it's not like there was a ton of them. Also saw various caddis, midges, hendricksons, sulfurs, midges, etc.

Stream in nice shape, low for this time of year but "perfect" on a fishability scale. Day was cool, overcast, and occasionally spit a bit of rain, but certainly not a drencher by any stretch. Stream was real crowded. I think there were 8 cars, other than us, in that last lot plus a bunch by the road on the way down. I musta saw 10-15 other guys over the 2 miles or so I fished, I'm not used to that on Penns except at GD time.

Very few risers, but if you looked real close and tight to the bank or midstream cover, you could see an occasional rise. A given fish may rise only once every 5-10 minutes. I started off with nymphs and streamers fishin the obvious pools and runs, to no avail. Eventually I tried one of the occasional risers, and he hit a #14 MB catskill tie the first case. His size surprised me, by the looks of the rise I thought it was a dink, but he was a respectable 12-13". This became my strategy. I'd walk real slow and watch the edges and backwaters closely for a rise. I'd go 20-30 minutes without even casting. But every time I found one, they were pushovers.

Ended up with 5 landed and a few missed. Most of the people I talked to were skunked or had 1-2.

Then the wife and I went to Elk Creek Cafe for dinner and music (Chicken Tractor). Crowded, no seats, but eventually got seated since there were only 2 of us and we were willing to share a table. Decent fishin, good food, good beer, and good music. Doesn't get any better.

Nice report. Sounds like a good time. How did the wife like the food and the band???

She loved it, but its not new to her. Elk Creek is one of her favorite places to go. And I think this is the 3rd time we were there for Chicken Tractor. We both like bluegrass.

She's also into amphibians. Lately she's started making it more official, she's volunteered for conservation organizations cataloging the breeding sites of various species. So, while I was fishin, she spent the day with camera and GPS looking for various frogs, toads, salamandars and such. Works out well for me! She did not have nearly as much luck as I, overcast and cool isn't exactly amphibian weather. She did get to talk to a fish commission guy, I never saw him...

pcray, I was fishing below coburn that day also!! also hit the cafe after the spinner fall at dusk!

edit!! I was there friday evening, saturday we fished in front of the cabin near weikert. no where near as many bugs as thursday or friday nights

Yes! Once bugs start hatching, this is my favorite way to fish. I call it "stalking risers," and your arm is not nearly as tired at the end of the day.
