Penn's Creek 9/1

SPent several hours Saturday morning on Penns above the fly section. Water temp was 63 at 6:00 AM (air temp 48). Water is low and there was some cloudyness, probably from the rain Thursday night. Spratic rising all morning to tricos. I struck out. Well for trout, I did figure out the chub pattern, #18 BHPTs. The best one was when I was putting a strike indicator on. I then cast and started cursing my luck for picking up a leaf on my back cast. Turned out a 2 inch chub went along for the ride.

I also spent some time on Penn's Sunday 9/2 in the afternoon - picked up a few trout, but mostly chub's - all on nymphs also - very few riser seen. I was 3 trout and 6 chubs - all on a #16 BHPT or a Green weenie

At least Penns is finally fishable again after a hot summer. I am headed up to our cabin in Poe Valley Thursday after work to get some quality fishing in on Friday before going to hopefully see PSU take a loss to my Irish on Saturday afternoon. I will probably be hitting Penns, Spring or Fishing Creeks. Just not sure yet.

Water temps have been down for two weeks. The fish were spread out in the deeper runs. I had to run up to State College during the game on Saturday. No traffic, nothing, it was like a ghost town. Good time to run errands. But lots of cops on the roads. I was tempted to shoot over to Spring Creek figuring I'd have it to myself.

Also had a chance to stop by the Feathered Hook in Colburn. Spent an hour there with Jim getting advice on flies for Penn's hatches. Great little shop to have in the area.

I checked out White Deer Creek on Sunday which was very low and clear. Water temp there was also in the 63-64 range. Usually when it's low at WD it's that way Fishing Creek is also.

What did Jim have to say about flies for on Penns. I'll probably just fish there since it is minutes from the cabin.

The Irish didnt look too good on Saturday Penns. Im a die hard irish fan too but I think they're going to have a rough year.

I agree... they will be lucky to go 7-4 this year considering they lost most of the OL, Quinny, 2 stud receivers and the RB...But atleast they have some decent film to assess their performance this weekend because they played a legitimate team in GT, unlike PSU who robbed the NCAA bakery with FIU......

Tricos but he wasn't very optimistic. There were midges in the air about half the size of the #24 trics I fish on the LL. I seined at the base of a riffle and only collected one small caddis larva. (I didn't kick the rocks.) There were lots of small caddis adults on the hemlocks along the stream but I understand they are nocturnal this time of year and lack of success with a similar size and color elk hair caddis seemed to bear that out. There were a few of a larger mayfly, maybe a size 16 flying around that had a reddish brown color to them. I couldn't catch any for a closer look.
I went through a whole rotation of dry flies and nymphs with no success. One that I forgot and should have tried is a green weenie. Only because my brother who doesn't have a clue about fly fishing usually ties one on out of desperation and often catches a trout in the most ridiculous circumstances.

Tell that story to Michigan...BTW I heard that ND was going with a true freshman on Saturday...If I had tickets to that game I'd have sold them...And I've eaten, breathed, $h!t and slept football my whole life.
