Penns Creek 6-6-08

Ok, it was sick. Friday night I saw more bugs than I have ever seen on any creek.

The water is still murkey but the flow was fine. In the evening, trout were rising to stoneflies or sulpher emergers. At dark all hell broke loose. There were what seemed to be millions of coffin flies hitting the water and Drakes emerging.

I was at a pool were a few trout were rising until dark. I had a nice pool pretty much to myself the enitre evening.
(my prior experience at Penns was witnessing incredible hatches with just a few trout rising)

But at dark it seemed every trout was rising. Trout were two feet away using my wake to take bugs on top. It was truly amazing. Here was a example of too many bugs on the water.

I was laughing to myself as I cast to the same 3 fish for 20 minutes before I managed a nice 15 incher on a coffin fly. Shortly before 10pm I called it quits. There were still many guys on the water as I was leaving. Oh, got to enjoy beating the brush on the way out to the trail too in the dark.

With coolers being wheeled in and tents poping up I figured I would head out. I don't think the Drake hatch on Penns is overstated.

Did you see any cicadas around ?
I would think that the warm weather finally got them going

You could hear them in the trees. But I did'nt see one in 2 days of fishing.

Oh, and gas was $3.85 a gallon in Lamar on Saturday. $3.99 in the burgh now.

Was on Penns today. Quite a few cicadas in the water but I didn't see a single one taken by a trout. All the shops in the area are selling cicada flies but no one I talked to today took any trout on em. There is quite an amazing collection of bugs in the drift.

Water temp was 62 at the lower end of the fly section.

I'm now hearing cicadas flies are working in the evenings. Soif I was heading up this week I'd have a couple in my fly box.
