Paflyfish Spring Jamboree 2025 - Save The Date

The Mods and I wanted to share that we have set the dates as Friday, May 16 - Sunday, May 18. More details will follow with a formal announcement later. I have talked to Jake at Seven Mountains and we are all set for the weekend. Heads up there was some conversation with Jake about a new numbering scheme for the cabins and camping areas. For example you may need to ask and confirm your cabin location as the map on the site may not be correct.

My attendance is likely. Wife has foot surgery beforehand and will be in a boot. If she can get around ok I'm good to go, and we do expect her to be. Also, baseball. Games are scheduled for Wednesday and Monday. But if there are rainouts between now and then they could get rescheduled for Fri or Sat.
Assuming I come, my 10 year old son will likely join me, at least for Saturday.

Went ahead and booked Thurs-Sun. Will be in a tent this year, but I booked one of the RV sites right by the pavilion (site 47). I figured get up away from the swamp they call tent sites, closer to bathrooms, wood, and festivities. No worries about noise complaints from my site. Plus if the boy conks out early he can go sleep and I'm still right there.

Dear Board,

Given the recent rain events, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in float tubing at maybe Colyer Lake or Sayers Dam? If so, I can bring an extra float tube, fins, and a PFD for someone to use.

Just thought I'd make the offer.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

That might not be a bad plan, and I might be interested. I've never used a float tube, but I could bring my canoe. I like using those.

There are some nice chain picks in Colyer these days.

Caught a chain pickerel in Penns last year. I may bring a tube and fins as well. JIC

I have two person flat back canoe (Esquif Mallard XL) and a 10 ft portabote. I also have a trolling motor with an all-day lithium battery, a good sized floating cooler and extra pfds.

Should I plan to bring something? Suggestions welcome.

Dear Kms,

That's up to you. I think that people coming for hatch matching and stream fishing will do just that. They may need to travel around in search of places to fish, but it can and will be done.

Colyer Lake is about 25-30 minutes right up the road from the campsite and is a pretty good warmwater lake. Whipple Dam State Park is a little further away and Poe Valley State Park is a little closer, basically across the street from the campground and then a 15 to 20-minute drive into the woods.

A lot depends on how much hassle it would be for you to bring a boat of some type. Car-topping the canoe or Porta-Bote should be easy enough and leaving it sitting by the cabin or campsite you are in shouldn't be a problem but might be worth checking with the campground to be sure. I'll get everything in my truck with a topper so I can do anything.

Please keep in mind that I'm not trying to change anyone's plans, just trying to suggest alternatives if the stream conditions don't improve.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Thanks. I’d much rather go stream fishing - one of the big attractions of fly fishing for me was needing to carry and transport less crap - but if the streams are a mess then I’d always take boat fishing over lake shore.

Sorry the weather is not cooperating for the jam. Lakes and mountain streams should be fishable. But, weather can change so be optimistic

I'll add Greenwood furnace lake as an alternative. I've never fished it, but Penn-Roosevelt and black moshannon (although on BM the wind can be terrible for unpowered boats) lakes. I think they stock both. Not sure how many trout would be left

The lake at Penn Roosevelt hasn't been stocked in a long time, and the dam is in disrepair. Greenwood Lake pretty much always has trout in it, but I wouldn't call it an excellent fishing experience. Small streams should be fine, which just means guys are going to have to spread out. I was on two small streams today, and they were much lower than I expected. The fishing was lousy, too.
