Oswayo River, 6/7/2007

While driving down Whitney Creek road last night I saw a bunch of bugs hitting the windsheild and decided to stop and see what they were. Brown Caddis of all sizes. Came out at Coneville, crossed the South Branch and didn't see as many there as up on Whitney.

Stopped at the Topeka bridge just to see what was happening and found a HUGE hatch of these brown Caddis flies. The Caddis are usually done by now here on the Oswayo, but I'm thinking the low water conditions must have the cycles messed up. I did see a couple of fish taking them downstream of the bridge, but nothing big. I did chase a Heron out of there when I pulled up.

Great hatch though.

eggman... I know this report is over a decade ago... do you still fish Oswayo? My wife and I have a camp on Topeka Hollow Rd and I a finally into fly fishing. Just trying to get some info on current conditions and flies I should have... We'll be in early June.

I love fishing the Oswayo. Its been far too many years, but I long to return the Oswayo Valley. March Browns and Grey Fox were good choices in late May.

Bring along some sulphur patterns, size 16.

Sulphur comparaduns work well.

Early June (1st week) is usually sulphur’s winding down and green drakes peak. Light Cahill and various caddis. Middle June has an 18 brown and 12 black caddis that can be spectacular.
