I haven't seen a historically consistent grannom hatch in maybe 3 years, where they would coat the rocks with their bodies and eggs. Well, I should say, over the past many years, it hasn't been like I remember. I haven't fished a decent sulfur hatch or any good mayfly hatch in maybe 5 years. I felt lucky last year to catch sulfur spinners a few nights. I don't know what's happening. If we get drizzle, as some meteorologist predict, instead of rain, I'll check out Oil Creek this weekend.
For other creeks, like I said, Cherry run, Pithole, Lower and Upper 2 mile creeks, Horse Creek, Hemlock from President up to Venus where McCauley and Auges run come in. But it's posted up there. Auges run had some big brookies in it for its size. Heavy springs at its head, but it's posted too. I believe for hunting, though. Dennison run. I usually spin fish these creeks early, like now. I wait till later to fly fish them, when the get lower and the trout have been seeing insects up in the film for many weeks. But swinging wet flies or streamers can be great. I used to do that more.
But here's to hoping Oil Creek gets down in time for some grey foxes and sulfurs. Plus, fishing for migrating smallmouth at the ice dam can be some wildly fun fly fishing.
