Time Fished: 100pm - 230pm
Weather Conditions: 65 degrees, mostly sunny, breezy
Water Conditions: 64 degrees, high, 2.5 ft visibility, 373 cfs
Insects: quite a few Caddis on the streamside brush.

I hadn’t fished Oil yet this year so I was determined to wet a line despite the less than ideal conditions. I walked about 20 minutes before starting to fish in what has become my favorite hole. It seems to have lost the luster it had 5-10 years ago. There was someone else present when I arrived, but he was working downstream so I stayed 100-200 yds upstream.

I caught a rainbow after about 20 casts but never caught another trout. I was swinging a woolly bugger / wet fly combo. As the water got deeper I had no strikes and I thought that visibility might be an issue. I cut off the wet and added 2 sinkers to try to get the fly closer to the trout. I fished like that for a long way before I had a strike but it was a good one. My biggest smallmouth in a creek, 18”, a welcome surprise. The 4 kayakers floating past at the moment I landed it were probably more excited than I was. My picture doesn’t do it justice. Funny how things work out sometimes when conditions are poor.
