Oil Creek, Venango Co, 5/23-25/2015

Friday after the cold front, clear and windy. Frost that night. No bugs seen.
Saturday: Nothing AM. when I returned at 6, there were good numbers of mayflies, mostly sulfurs and grey foxes coming off. Fish feeding well. Caught mostly rainbows. A few were very big, fat fish that fought hard on dries. Sz. 14 yellow dry worked well. At 730, there were also spinners coming down, but I didn't see any real spinner clouds. Was amazed to see a green drake coffin fly smack down on the water in front of me then return to the grey fox spinners high above the water. Only one I have ever seen here, so far.

Sunday and Monday didn't have anything like the activity on Saturday. Nymphing a sz. 14 sulfur nymph was productive. Hoping bug activity picks up later so there is more dry fly action.

Driving away at 9, there were lots of spinners over the road, but I had places to go and didn't feel like waiting on the water till after dark. it was a good sign, though.

We need rain.
Where I was in the Park, Sundays hatch was heavy compared to the rest of the Memorial weekend.
It wasn't worth waiting for the spinners on Monday night. It happened at dark and even though the surface was full of spinners, few fish came up. It might of had something to do with all the tree seed pods and debris floating on the water.
I've spotted a few coffin flies through the years at Jersey Bridge and figured the came from one of the tribs.
Where abouts did you see this white bug?

Fished both ends of the park on Memorial Day. Saw the same as everyone else, Sulfurs & Grey Foxes. Also some Blue Wings. Very few consistent risers. Did manage a few on Sulfurs and Blue Wing dries. There was a lot of tree debris on the water that added to the difficulty, windy too but that is nothing new at Oil Creek. A little water would also help. I hope it's not over before I can get back on the water.
Green Drakes on Oil Creek... wouldn't that be fun ?

I saw the one coffin fly at Columbia farm.

We just did have a good shot of rain wednesday, so even though it was down compared to recent times, it is still in good shape. Should get some rain before Friday.
