Time Fished:
445pm - 745pm (Miller Farm)
820pm - 845pm (Railroad Bridge & Fry’s Landing

Weather Conditions: Mix of clouds and sun, mostly clouds and one rainbow 3 short rain showers, Air Temp 55 degres falling to 49

Water Conditions: Clear, water temp 56 degrees, CFS averaged 285

Insects: saw a handful of sulphurs

First stop was about mid point between Drake’s Well and Petroleum Center. I started with a light Caddis and the trout were interested. Had more misses than hookups (this would a theme with every fly). The stream was lovely for about 30 min with a decent numbers of risers and good weather. Then the waves of rains started. It seemed like every successive burst of rain caused some of risers to not return. Maybe clouding that number alittle were the fish I was “sticking” but not “hooking”. I suspect those trout stopped feeding for awhile.

I worked my way through these flies: #18 peacock body Caddis (trout Interested), #16 comparadun sulphur yellow (used twice, first time no interest, 2nd time caught 2), #14 Adams (old school but no luck), #16 shuck sulphur (no luck).

While it rained pretty hard I looked through my boxes just to pull out an effective fly that I rarely use. I noticed about a forty year old Adams. So I tied it on and when I tried to press the barb down, I snapped the hook off. So I found another Adam’s and repeated with success. I tried it out and had some takes but no hoookups.

I caught 3 browns, 2 rainbows and had about 16 more strikes. The fish were healthy and fought well.

I wanted to check the lower end of the creek before dark to see what spinner action may appear. So I set off for Fry’s Landing. What I didn’t know is the Petroleum Center Bridge is out so this trip would add precious time to my commute that I really didn’t have. When I arrived at the creek I only saw a few bugs in the riffle by the RR bridge. After seeing no rises I quickly worked downstream casting as I went. Never saw a rise in the end.

I’d say it was a day of promise with the sulphurs just starting and the fish that were rising were not selective at all.

ominous
Photo #2: rainbow over creek. Time to start casting.
