I fished the open water above Petroleum Center. It was a total cloudless day, very sunny. Today’s air temperature was 26 at sunrise and 65 when I started to fish. Water temp was 52 degrees. Flow and color was great. I fished from 345 to 545pm
Grannoms were all over the streamside bushes when I walked down. I happened to fish an area with an abundance of willows and shade and that really attracted the caddis. They were at their peak egg laying at 5pm, just all over. Not even close to the most I’ve ever seen but as a fly fisher they were in numbers you would be pleased with. However I saw only 1 rise. I think if the water was 5 degrees warmer that might have been different. I should also mention as I fished back to the car, the areas with less streamsude brush had far less grannoms laying eggs.
Although conditions weren’t ideal for this (water a little too cold) I choose to swing 3 flies. Leadwing Coachman (top), grizzly king (middle), small olive wooly bugger. I had 3 ferocious strikes and 2 of which cleaned me of all 3 flies. I never break line so I’m at a loss to explain. The bad news is I can’t say for sure which fly they took, but I’m assuming it was the Leadwing Coachman since it was the top fly and that’s where it broke both times.
Seemed like the fish turned off about 515pm. Hopefully water temps continue to climb and the dry fly action begins soon.
