Oil Creek; 05/01/10:Venango County

Creek is in awesome shape. The 'mother's day' caddis has waned. But if the dry fly action isn't as good, tightlining the immitating caddis pupa still works great. Fish I caught had what looked like mud in their mouth, but it was wads of caddis pupa.
A few of the tan caddis were see flitting about but I didn't see a big hatch yet. I hammered the rainbows in a run lower in Oil Creek State park for about 1 1/2 hours until I ran out of fresh fish. I'd expect good tan/olive caddis next weekend. Probably not sulfurs next weekend, but with high-70's temps on-and-off , they may show soon. Also, Grey foxes, while a variable hatch, may be on as soon as this weekend or sooner. The fish are really attuned to feeding on the surface. A nice sz. 10-12 tan yellow mayfly should get their attention when it happens. Some years it seems they don't turn-on to the surface until late caddis and sulfurs. Low water has the fish turned on early.

Thanks for the update. I have never fished Oil and it's on my list to try here in the next month.

fished it on sat may 1st, fished right at the bridge at the petroleum center, lots of fish rising, looked to be a size 20 bwo ?

caught fish sunday evening on a size 18 BWO parachute , there are size18-20 BWO , size 16 tan caddis , size 14 olive caddis , size 16 crane flys , size 16 bright green caddis and tons of midges right now on oil ,. keep in mind fish don't have to be rising to be looking up .....

ps: i think u may see sulfurs this weekend (H20 temps 66 right now !!!!)
