My son and I were supposed to be rolling into Fort Smith this evening. The Bighorn wasn't the final destination but a stop on the way to north western MT for a backpack fishing trip.

On June 4th, however, I had a ladder slide out from under me. That resulted in a fractured scapula and a couple of fractured vertebrae. The vertebrae turned out to basically be a non issue but the shoulder blade was another story. I'm five weeks in and have another five weeks until I can return to normal activities like rowing and backpacking.

The pain and range of motion have improved dramatically over the last 2-1/2 weeks so I thought I'd give some fishing a try again. I did catch a bass on a popper about a week after my fall but realized it was a mistake as soon as I set the hook. I thought I'd be able to control how much I moved my line hand on a hook set. I didn't do very well.

Today, I dropped my wife and oldest daughter off at the lake and spent a few hours on a brookie stream. It was nice to get back out and get a bunch of dry fly eats even if the fish were tiny.

I'm struggling with missing out on a trip with my son for chunky cutthroats this summer but my fall could have had much worse results. All in all I'm feeling pretty fortunate.

Now I get to spend another year planning the trip.
