Although I reside in PA, I attend a college near Cleveland, around an hour from the PA/OH border. Fishing in OH is obviously terrible, so I've decided to venture out and fish some of the rivers in northwestern PA. I mainly fly fish for trout, and I've visited Neshannock Creek which was beautiful and had some great stocked fish, however I wanted to branch out and fish some other rivers. I planned on visiting the Slippery Rock Creek to do some fishing this weekend, but was wondering if anyone could lend any guidance or advice on if it's worth my time or if there's other rivers I should check out. I plan on fly fishing a lot of northwestern pa for the next few years, so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and happy fishing!

Next time you’re in volant stop in the shop and get a guidebook- there are a few. Lots of water to explore in nwpa. The ANF would take a lifetime to fish - and that’s just one part of it.

I agree with getting a book or two. Quite a bit of options in NWPA, from places like Oil creek, a large stream with good hatches, to tiny native brookie streams. A nice middle of the road option is Little Sandy near Polk, it features a special reg section, that I feel doesn't fish as well as it used to, but is still worth some time to explore. The Slippery Rock is more of a bass fishery. It does get stocked, and there is the fly only area near Heinz camp, but I feel its also not the fishery is once was. I've lived in numerous places within a mile of the stream my entire adult life, and I rarely fish it. Better options to the north.

I used to get out the old DeLorme and just go explore. Gas makes that tougher these days.

The Allegheny River below the dam to Warren is some good water. Some big fish in there. Just have to watch the gauge for safe flows.

There’s a bunch up that way gotta get out and just explore. If you want a river Allegheny river and for trout in the river gotta fish below kinzua dams stretch of trout waters. Look at your trout stocking schedule and pick some creeks to go fish.
All this info is incredibly useful! Oil creek seems like a good place for this weekend, but I’m going to look into some books or guides to see if I can find some other rivers as well. Might end up just checking out Little Sandy near Polk, seems like a gorgeous area. Thank you all for the info.

Just get on RT6 and keep going. there is a ton of good water on that route.
