Time Fished: 730am-1045am 5 Brk. 4 Brn
Water Conditions: 48 degrees, off color
Weather Conditions: 58 degrees, Cloudy, Rain at times
Insects: Caddis, small BWO
We try to coordinate our Kettle Creek trip up so we all reach DuBois at the same time, where we eat breakfast. Someone slept in so I was an hour ahead of everyone else. This allowed me to stop at North Fork in Brookville to get in some early fishing. After just 15 minutes I called the boys and told them they should stop by since the creek was on fire and no one else was here.
It was raining so I started with a streamer and had hook ups on my first 2 casts. I was using a big streamer to attract maximum attention but a smaller streamer holds more fish. My big streamer was getting pounded in the first hole but I only landed one. I started in hole #2 but only after tying on a smaller streamer. That helped bringing more fish to hand. I was getting 50/50 brook and brown. I noticed quite a few rises as I worked the holes but I didn’t see very many insects. After pass #1, I switched over to dry flies thinking I’d have about 3 fly changes max before I’d find the right fly. Well I never found the right fly. This wasted a ton of time.
I assume the trout were actually taking emergers by the way they would not even inspect a dry fly. So I burned through too many offerings during a time when I’d have a streamer strike about every 5th cast. I burned an hour and a half chasing a dry fly bite while the streamer bite was there for the taking. So I switched back to streamers and finished to morning that way.
Ended up landing 5 brook and 4 brown. Nice stop especially considering conditions were perfect. Only the second time I fished here. Glad I got the opportunity to try it again.
