So I officially kicked off my river bass season this weekend. The air temp was around 40 and water temp was 37. The gauge at Danville was below 5ft and water had a nice green tint with decent visability. I focused on bank eddie's and soft water on current seams. I fished a floating line with a 12lb straight flouracarbon 9ft leader. I tied on a size 2 olive / white Clouser minnow and kept it low and slow in the soft water. The bites came very softly with the smallmouth but the walleyes were more aggressive. I ended the afternoon with two smallmouth and two walleyes in the same eddie. I don't catch walleyes very often but in the winter your chances are pretty good with a Clouser on your line for fly gear.

The Susky looked very good when I drove over it yesterday and levels are fishable. I suspect this won't last long with the recent precip and snow melt. At 37, the water temp is still on the cold side (I got the exact same number last week at Middletown), but things should pick up in a week or two and bass fishing should be game-on.

Nice to see the walleyes too.

Walleyes are always a nice bonus fish. I only catch a few each season and mostly during the late fall or early spring period.

Very cool, and just plain admirable this time of year. I am still fishing creeks under 20 feet wide and sheltered from wind so far this year!
