Time Fished:
07:30 am until about 06:30 pm
Weather:
Mostly sunny with temps in the mid to lower 80s. It felt a little warm during the afternoon, when the sun was high, but overall it was a beautiful day for mid August on a trout stream.
Water:
We floated from Westernport to Black Oak and the river was running just under 500 cfs at the Luke gauge. The water clarity was bad below the effluent discharge, as always. The water was cold running in the low 60s mid-day coming out of Barnum, but I would guess that it was in the mid 60s in the stretch that we floated.
Hatches:
Very little of anything going on hatch wise. We saw a few clouds of trico spinners and a very sparse ISO hatch. The stream bottom was covered in cased caddis of the lime green variety, and the terrestrials were out and about but very few rising trout.
Results:
It is sad to say that I was bummed about trout fishing going into this trip, but spending some time on the Susky and Juniata the last couple of years during summer bass season will do that to you. Mkerr and I decided to float the North Branch, due to the most recent Harrisburg blow out. It was a great trip for both nymphing and throwing streamers. Flash fly clousers were very effective along with the standard stonefly/worm combo nymph rig. The fish were spread out, aggressive and healthy. We boated closed to two dozen rainbows with five in the upper teens, a ton of fallfish with a few of them in the upper teens, about a half dozen smallmouth, one largemouth, one red breast sunfish and Mike caught a really nice brook trout. I don't know what kind of grand slam that is, but it was enjoyable. The trout mostly looked wild to me and they were healthy and strong. It was a long float, but the company was good and we finally made it down that river without losing an anchor.
