Weather and Stream Conditions:
We started fishing Friday evening around 5pm, with cloud cover and temperatures in the upper 70's. The water was clear and running at about 240 cfs. We floated Saturday from Barnum to Westernport, with rain on and off, and 60 degree air temps. The water remained clear and stable at 240 cfs.

Insect Activity:
The bugs were diverse. Plenty of small midges (size 24), terrestrials (ants, beetles, and small hoppers), several variations of caddis, but the most prevelent was a size 14 tan caddis. Stoneflies mostly brown size 18, with the yellow and lime sallies getting stronger at dusk. Isos (size 12) were around but not in big numbers. Sulphers also made a sparse showing around dark.

Results:
Friday afternoon was very good. I started by fishing a size 12 Stimulater with a caddis dropper, and I had fish responding to both flies. A long drift was required to get them to eat the dry. The fish really started looking up towards dark, and I was able to cut the dropper off, and take about 10 fish in an hour and a half. They came up to Adams dries, CDC yellow sallies, CDC limes Sallies and Elk Hair Caddis. I found that rotating dry flies helped with the refusals that I was sometimes getting. Most of the fish were Browns with few rainbows thrown in. Saturday was tougher, we had some tough floating conditions with the low water, and it did not seem that anything was responding to dry flies. We had our best luck, parking up on the nicer runs and nymphing them up with a stonefly and a hot pink san juan worm tandem (bait fishing). We took quite a few on Saturday before 9am, but it really slowed down after that. In all, it was a great time on a great river. My poor man's drift boat worked okay on the high grandiant North Branch and fun was had by all.

I did the Barnum to western port float with spring creek outfitters lady Saturday. We did well fishing small PTs under hoppers. 70/30 to the nymph. Lost too many fish to count landed many as well. Friggin loved it!

Sipe,
Sweet, I figured that the afternoon bite would be good, based on what we experienced Friday afternoon. The North Branch is a great river if you are floating, young, or a strong wader, but man is it a pain to wade. The fish are diverse, good sized, and they have plenty of room to run. The hatches are getting better every year, and they sure are diverse. I saw the Spring Creek outfitters truck and trailer as we came into Westernport. If you fished with Harold, you had a good time, I have met him a couple times along the savage and he is full of knowledge!!! Glad you had a good trip

100% right about the wading, just about the only place that scares me to wade.

7x - as a non resident, i can't work out what i need to pay for a day on the savage, NBOTP or Beaver Creek.

I'm down in august but can't make head nor tail of the regs n licences...

nice report though.

I bought a three day license from MD but I think you can use a WV or MD license on NBoP.

For PA residents, MD fishing licenses are $26.70 for a three-day license and $52.70 for an annual license. In both cases you would also need to add another $10 for a trout stamp.

I plan to wade the N. Branch Potomac Saturday and Sunday this weekend. I've been to Savage River several times and love it there and have always wanted to give the N. Branch a try. From what I understand this will involve a bit of a hike and some difficult wading but it sounds like it should be worth it. If anyone else is interested in joining me please let me know.

One more comment: I'm pretty sure sipe is right, and it looks like WV licenses are much cheaper. However, if you have a MD license you can also hit the Savage River which is nearby. I'm not sure what else is around there in WV.

Thanks Brent.

I got confused by this bit :

The Non Resident Trout Stamp ($10.00) allows non residents of the State of Maryland 16 years of age or older to fish in any special catch and return trout management area and to possess trout taken from non-tidal waters of Maryland.

i wasn't sure if i needed a trout stamp to fish in general regs waters and NOT take trout... it would have been easier if they just said "all trout water fishing $10".

i have one morning in mid August so not sure which stream i'll hit yet - probably the Beaver as its the shortest drive from Winchester VA

cheers.

wade slowly and watch ur step, u can be ankle to chest deep in one step also its very very swift and slippery....also make sure you clean ur gear they both have rock snot in them

Did that float a couple years ago. We caught Isos in the later afternoon then sulphurs picked up after that. We were lead to believe it sucked for bugs but was good for streamers but we found the opposite.
It was probably the rockiest water I've ever floated, I'm surprised that raft made it through all that.

Our success came on size 12? Tan/gray parachute hoppers with an 18 BH PT dropper.

I fished the N. Branch on Saturday. First thing when I showed up I ended up meeting another guy there and we decided to fish together for the rest of the day. Other than that, we saw one drift boat float through but didn't see anyone else the whole time. Had a good time fishing together; he had fished this river several times before and was kind enough to show me around as well as offer some flies he had tied. We fished from the second big parking lot at Barnum downstream for several miles toward Westernport. Flow was steady at 210 cfs all day.

Well I guess everyone was right: it really is tough to wade. Had some close calls and my legs got quite a workout. In anticipation of this trip I had installed studs on my boots the night before and I'm glad I did.

We mostly used dry and dropper with a terrestrial on top and had the most luck in the pocket water. I caught five fish and he ended up with 15. All were rainbows except one brown I caught. We fished until dark hoping to catch some surface action at dusk, but saw no trout rising.

Went to Savage River on Sunday and had a good time as usual. Had a great time on the N. Branch but I can see why people like to float this stretch of water. Even so, I'd definitely do it again.
