Newbie in Southeastern PA

Hello all,

My name is Chris, I just turned 21 and am from the Lehigh Valley area.

I have been fishing going on 3 years but have never ventured into fly fishing. I bought an 8'6 inch 4wt white river rod with a couple accessories last year. I have not used it, I practiced casting in the yard but that is it. I find fishing to be an extremely relaxing hobby, I promise not to steal any of your secret spots or your fish, it is just a skill I would like to have so I can do it casually and relax.

I have so many questions about what type of flies to use in winter and where to go, I know of only two fly spots.

Welcome to the site. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge from the members. I see you are from Germansville. We purchased a Rhodesian Ridgeback from a breeder located in Germansville. She was an excellent dog, our gentle giant at 120 lbs. She was always beside my wife. It was as if they were attached with Velcro.

Welcome to the site! The Lehigh valley has several good fly fishing streams, which most people know about. I live in the valley as well and have been catching fish on nymphs primarily, a few of my favorites this time of year are golden stoneflys(two bit hooker), walts worms as well as midge patterns, your mileage may vary though. I would also recommend learning how to tie up some Dorsey yarn indicators as most fish in this area spook easily. Let me know if you have any questions!

I have seen many recommendations for so many types of flies. Is it better to get them at the Jim Thorpe fly shop or is the trip out to Cabela's more worth it? Sometimes it is quite intimidating with the amount there is to learn.

Is it better to start on the Little Lehigh, or the big lehigh?

I would say try to support a local shop if you could . If you are in Jim Thorpe there is good trout water in almost every direction and some excellent. They will have local knowledge , give some suggestions with flys and generally are more than willing to give a few ideas where to go and park .

I would go to wherever is closer and ask for some fishing recommendations. Little lehigh and big lehigh are both very low right now so fishing is technical. You may want to check out the pohopoco, very consistent flows and temps because of the dam.
