Think Spring and the Jam.That pretty much covers my two weeks in "The Last Best Place" Rain, more rain coupled with wind that would blow the hair off a dog made for just lousy conditions. That was the down side. The up side was being in a fantastic place that defies word to describe.Pictures do New Zealand no justice as well.
Just as at the Jam the problem was flooded stream and non stop rain. Like that trip finding fish-able water was the challenge and after I was told by a Kiwi friend that the Conway River looked like it had dropped and had cleared enough to make it worth the 45 minute drive to check out. The report was correct and the green tinged water held promise of a trout or two. Unfortunately I'd left my waders back at the house so my wading was severely limited and made a good stretch of river off limits. There was still a lot of fish-able water at my disposal and best of all no boot tracks were to be seen along the bank.
After a couple of hours and about a half mile of river probed with nymphs and streamers not one trout was raised. It was a discouraging start, but at least the sun was out and a promise of a better day tomorrow.
Driving back I checked another smaller stream and found it basically unfishable.

GG I feel your pain. I think I could make it rain in Death Valley, if I showed up with my FF ing gear. Still if your in New Freakin Zealand, how bad could it really be?

Where in NZ? I lived there for a year, and absolutely loved it - still trying to figure out how to make it back...

Unfortunately hadn't gotten into FFing yet, when I was there - so when I do make it back, that's gonna be my focus.

If you're on the South Island, check out the town of Te Anau (where I lived at this time 2 years ago) - right in the heart of Fiordland. Beautiful place and tons of fishing opportunities nearby.

Enjoy your time - all of us here in PA are jealous!
