Neshannock Creek, Lawrence County 5/11/14

Took advantage of the beautiful day and took the soon to be wife down to Volant for some hiking and fishing. Stopped by the shop for some supplies and saw that the stream was in perfect condition running clear and cool. Saw Nick aka Streamerguy who mentioned that he caught 2 and that the trout were very active, rising to the top for dry caddis and adams. I decided to skip behind the shop and try what Bob the shop owner calls the "cheese hole" a little ways downstream. Used a dry dropper rig with an olive-x caddis on top and a pheasant tail underneath. Managed 2 rainbows, both taking the pheasant tail. After some lunch, I ventured further downstream to "lazy mans hole" and netted another bow on the pheasant tail, biggest one of the day which I posted below, easily 19-20 inches. The dry dropper then started to slow down and I switched to an indicator with the pheasant tail on top and a frenchie below and netted another bow on the first cast with the frenchie. To end the day I went back to "cheese hole" and netted a brown and a bow with the brown taking the frenchie and the bow taking the pheasant tail.

I think I caught one more after you went by. Kept switching from caddis to mayflies and I eventually said screw it and just decided to drop a size 18 Adams off the caddis. Only got the 3 on dries but who knows how many I missed. My hook sets on dries this year have been downright horrendous lol. Could have done better nymphing but that's no fun haha.. The risers definitely slowed down as the morning progressed.

Fished a spot on the open regs water afterwards and picked up 3 more nymphing, and then swung by Shenango and actually did pretty good there. Nymphing with different caddis imitations worked great and swinging wets were pretty productive as well. Saw a couple rises there Friday evening, but none yesterday. Hopefully the topwater action will pick up(hopefully there's still fish left when it does :-( )

Saturday afternoon/evening I managed to squeeze in a half an hour on Neshannock and caught 4 pretty quickly in that amount of time, and a bonus smallie. Saw a pike cruising around too.......one of these days I'll get myself to target them more throughout the watershed. They're definitely in there!

I hate doing this, but that fish might push 16". There are plenty of other 20" fish in there though. In that hole.
