With the usual Easter family get-together canceled, the wife and I really had nothing to do today.
With the weather being so nice, I talked her into going for a "ride"
We didn't want to go very far - an hour or less. Decided to go to Volant - with some fishing gear on board.

Got there around 12:30 - and found some grannoms in the air.
Not a heavy hatch for sure. I'm guessing I caught either the beginning or the end of the emergence.

There were a few other fishermen around. But certainly wasn't crowded.
And everyone gave a wide berth.
So, I gave it a whirl

Water was clear and at a nice level for wading.
Found a few fishing rising occasionally above the bridge by the fly shop.
They were quite picky. But I managed to catch several on a #14 Grannom dry

Never got a water temp. But it was comfortably cool.

About 3 pm, we decided to walk along the trail downstream towards the covered bridge.
Found even fewer flies down there, and saw no rises at all.

However, I did come across a nice patch of ramps. And they were ready for harvest.
Having brought no shovel today, I was ill prepared to dig some.
So, I dug out the tire iron and gave it a go.
Luckily, the soil in that area was pretty soft. And it worked out fairly well.
Ended up coming home with a nice bag full of the delicacies.

Not a typical Easter holiday for sure.
But still a pretty enjoyable day.
And sure beat sitting around the house.

I went to the Neshannock Creek today as well. I fished Open Water downstream from the DHALO.

Time Fished: 130pm - 430pm
Weather: Mostly Cloudy but occasional sun, 65 degrees
Water Conditions: Slightly Off Color, 49 degrees at 3pm
Insects: Grannoms were heaviest at 4pm (with what looked like a steady upstream egg laying flight) but some were in air all day; also found many impressive stonefly cases on the shore

My first hour was the best. I had 4-5 trout on but did not land any. I was running a woolly bugger with a traditional wet fly dropper to imitate the caddis. Only had 1-2 more trout strikes in the remaining 2 hours. Other people I talked to also had slow day with 2 being the best, so DryFlyGuy hit the jackpot, both catching the most and having some rising fish. I did see about 8-10 rises, but most were chubs. Saw 2 trout rises, each came up just once. There were more people fishing than I expected in the section I was in.

Based on the photo I included with the stonefly cases, you can tie your stonefly nymphs as big as you want.

Yeah - first time fishing for me in almost a month.

We really debating going out.
But work has been pretty stressful for me right now.
And I needed some mental health activity.
Really took my mind off things for awhile
