Despite the 19 degree temp outside and a decent snowfall, I was feeling the itch to hit a stream for some good ol' winter fishing. Decided to fish Neshannock behind the shop in Volant. Got to the town around 11:30 and fished till 3:00. I first stopped in to chat with Bob who told me some shocking news, THE LOG IS GONE! Last week with the amount of runoff, local creeks rose to high levels breaking any ice sheets along the way. As Bob explained, one managed to get underneath the log, flip it, and the current did the rest. I was shocked and kinda bummed because as anyone else who fished here before knows, the thing was huge and I sometimes liked to stand on top of it and fish from there.

Today the creek was at a decent height with about 2 feet of visibility. Didn't take a temp but I assure you it was cold. Before I left today I decided to tie up a few frenchies, and it was a good thing I did because they were today's winning fly. Managed 4 nice browns all on the frenchie. I'm never able to get out to fish in the winter much and have never had much success in the cold. This was an awesome experience. Guess it goes to show that despite ringlets constantly freezing over, toes going numb, gloves getting wet, and net getting as stiff as a board, winter fishing can have its benefits.

Great report!

It's nice to see some folks can get out and even on icy streams have some luck catching trout.

Nice catching. 4 1/2 hrs is a long time in those temps. I tend to max out at around 2-2 1/4.

Some nice fish there - people sometimes forget trout are a cold water species lol.

geebee, I forgot to mention that Bob actually allowed me to thaw out in his shop a few times which definitely helped. Without his generosity I definitely wouldn't have lasted, nor would my rod

always head up to the neshannock creek inn for a Rueben... best ruebens anywhere and warms up the toes.

sounds like a nice outing!

Good report and pics fishingnoob. I'll miss that log........always liked to fish off of it instead of wading to keep my feet warm! Creek looks good...

My brother and I took a ride down to Neshannock to pick up a few things at the shop as well as fish a little bit. Creek was in great shape with a good flow and a nice green color. I got 2 bows on a chartreuse sucker spawn, a brown on a frenchie, and my brother got a brown on a white bugger. Nice afternoon on the water. Supposed to get cold again starting tonight so fishing may be done for a while(except for those who ice fish).

Last year is when I first started to really get into tying them and since then they've been one of my go-to nymphs especially for stockies. They definitely catch fish!!
