I arrived at the creek before sunrise to fish the coolest part of the day. Air temp was 66 degrees. There were heavy clouds and it took quite a long time to brighten up so I didn't really know what I was dealing with as far as clarity and temperature.
I fished from 540am to 710am. I had a few strikes early and caught 1 rainbow before it was bright enough to read my thermometer.. The water temp at 620am was 70 degrees. The fish I caught fought hard and showed no sign of stress, but clearly conditions were not ideal. At that time, I could also tell the water was far more cloudy than I first thought, but still ok for fishing. All of my strikes came before 6am but there were very few. This stretch (in the open water) had a good population of fish 5 weeks ago and I'm not sure if they weren't there anymore or if most were just not active due to the high water temperature. I usually catch several SM Bass in this stretch and they weren't cooperating either, so maybe other factors impacting the bite. I saw no insect activity.
