Time Fished: 630am to 645am
Weather: 63 degrees & Sunny. Sun was not hitting he water in the area I was fishing
Water Conditions: Very low and clear. Really in rough shape for trout fishing.
Insects: None
I was fishing an open water stretch. When I got to the creek, the water level was the lowest I've ever seen in that hole. I checked the temp and saw it was acceptable but I had brought a stringer along in case I needed to keep any fish. I worked my way through the best areas. It was quick to fish through since there was so little holding water. I was runny a woolly bugger with 2 droppers (both classic wet flies). I never had a strike, so I left but I did not go home.
I decided to use the day to confirm the water temperature differences in the Lawrence Co sections for future reference.
Top to bottom took me exactly one hour to complete this. From top to bottom, the temps were:
- Volant in the riffle right below the dam at the DHALO (67 degrees)
- Volant Covered Bridge 67 degrees. No temp change in 1.7 miles, but the Covered bridge was probably 1/4 of a degree warmer than at the dam
- Walker Mill Bridge 68 degrees....so it went up 1 degree in about a mile
- Gerson's Camp 70 degrees....so it gained 2 degrees in about 3.6 miles. Quite a few streams run in but they are apparently not cold enough to offset the impacts of the sun
- Downtown New Castle 69 degrees....This stretch allowed water temps to go down one degree in about 4 miles. That would lead one to believe there are some cold water influences in this long stretch.
In terms of anglers, the DHALO is where everyone was fishing. 5 cars at the Fly Shop and 2 cars at covered bridge. The only other car I saw was between the Covered Bridge and Walkers Mill bridge and it was not parked at a bridge. No one at the cement bridge on 956, no one at Rainbow Bend, Walkers Mill, Gersons Camp, or Lakewood.
Neshnnock has fished well for me into late June and even mid July some years. This year will not be one of them. My best day in late June was 6-19-11 when I caught 22. The latest I ever fished it was 7-18-15 and I landed 4 that day. 2015 was a year of very timely rain showers that extended the fishable days.
The couple highlights of this morning were seeing a doe with 2 fawns. I have probably seen 10 doe with fawns and one fawn was the most I had seen. I also saw a hen turkey near Rainbow Bend. The way she moved around and was tolerant of me, it looked like she was a hen off the nest trying to quickly eat after a long night and then get back to sitting on her eggs. Dry springs are usually good hatches.
