Fished opening day with my brother in law. Started around 8:30 in the DHALO section about half way between the shop and the covered bridge. Water is very low. Hit a few good holding spots and didn't see many fish. Had a flash or two but nothing worth staying around for. So we switched spots around 10am and headed downstream from the covered bridge a good 2 miles or so in the ATW. Parked at a bridge and fished under it where I've had success before (figured the stocked fish would be right there). There wasn't a fish in sight. I think the early stockings this year helped the fish move around a bit. We saw a handful of people upstream and headed up there to check out what the fishing was like. There was a guy sitting on a large rock with a spinning rod catching fish after fish on either meal worms on salmon eggs. Probably 8 fish in 30 min. There were a few kids messing around on the shore line and another adult or two fishing this big hole. The guy on the rock landed a nice 22" golden rainbow and my brother in law helped him net it. After that they all left and we had the hole to ourselves. We fished that for another 2-3 hours until the rain started to set in. I landed about 4 chubs, 4-5 trout, and a nice little smallie. Biggest trout was a nice 17" hook jawed rainbow. My brother in law was holding onto the skunk. He was crossing the stream and took a swim (seems to every time I fish with him). So I soon handed him my spot, he caught a fish about 5 casts later and we then headed home.
The water was still fairly cold for it being so low. My feet were numb when I left the stream. Didn't take a temp though. There were a few caddis, maybe left over grannoms, a handful of midges, and sporatic yellow crane flies around sz 16. I didn't spot any risers, but a few people said they saw some here and there. All fish were taken on wooly buggers, red SJW, or light or dark hares ears. Saw a few nymphs on rocks in the 12-14 size range. I'm assuming one was a march brown and the other could have been a sulphur/cahill. Those should be hatching soon
on this stream.
