Met behind the fly shop at 8am with Groove790, flipnfly, and troutslammer. We were all hoping to catch the grannoms right and get some topwater action on this hatch. It was quite brisk in the morning, just barely over freezing. It later warmed up into the low 50's in the early afternoon. I fished from 8-4pm. The stream temp was quite cold and we were all hoping that the fish would react to the bugs in the air. The hatch didn't start until about 10am and hit it's peak around 12/1pm. The fish rose consistantly for over a good hour in the right spots on the stream. Once the sun hit it's peak the fish stopped rising.
The key was to have a dry- dry fly riding high on the surface with an occasional twitch. Once it got wet from a fish or two, there were many refusals. I landed 6 on the day, all rainbows, 3 on top and 2 on a wetfly on the swing and another early on with a SJW. Troutslammer did quite well, and flipnfly and groove each caught a couple. Groove caught his first fish on his own fly which is always fun. Another friend of mine fished farther downstream and had great success too. Lots of bugs are always fun, but I don't think the hatch has hit it's peak yet. There were 2-3 times as many bugs when I hit it last year for a day.
Now get out there and fish!!
