Well I had a chance to get out for an hour last night and it just so happened to be my first time fishing this season. I'm very limited with good trout water near me and I did not have time to drive up to the Saucon, so the mighty Neshaminy it was. Rusty would be an understatement.
When I arrived at 6:45, one other car was parked in the lot and the gentleman was not fishing where I was intending to. I fished a riffle below the pool I was targeting waiting for a rise and within 5 minutes the first fish furiously broke the surface. Emergers! I made my way up and for the next hour I was humbled by selective stocked trout that were earmarked for my cast iron skillet. I believe they were targeting BWO emergers. I only saw a few size 18 blueish flies about, mixed in with midges. I did see one missed strike and a fly escape but most rises were successful for the fish. I tried BWO duns, emergers, midge duns and nymphs, hairs ears, PT's, Prince, and birds nests....dead drifted, swung, lifted.....nothing but humble pie.
Finally after concedeing defeat I moved down stream towards my car and stopped at one nice hole and landed a bluegill and a rock bass on BHHE. On my last drift under a log jam I had a substantial take and hesitated on the hook set, losing a decent trout, rubbing salt in the wound.
It was great just getting out and in the water. Hopefully I can hit it tomorrow if the rains come and cancel out a baseball day.
