Name this fly.

This guy was fluttering on my back door. About a size 8 maybe size 6. Never saw one of these before. Date June 5.

My guess would be an Argus Northern Caddisfly (Genus: Hydatophylax)

Looked it up. Yup I would say so. At first I thought October caddis, but way too early.

Here is a photo of that species of bug out of the book Caddisflies by Gary LaFontaine that you gave me many years back. Of course most of the photography in that book is black and white. He referred to it by a different common name than I did but it is the same bug.

apparently it is. Named for the grass they find it on in the UK. I was making a joke but learned something as well.

You are all wrong. It’s a Badazz Caddis. You don’t want to mess with anything that big. They are native to New Jersey, a mutant species which evolved on our numerous toxic landfills. I make reference here to “Toxic Avenger” also a New Jersey native.

Here’s another one for you. Landed on the screen while we were having lunch. I’m about a mile from the nearest stream. I know it’s a mayfly and it was huge! Big enough to fly wherever it wants.

Not sure of Latin, but pretty sure common name is yellow drake based on size color and time of year. Its nymph is a burrowing type. Likes silty or muddy bottoms, pools.

Agree on Hex Limbata (Giant Mayfly).
Saw a hatch last year (late June) around 9PM on a stream. The fish went crazy.
